So we played two games of 40K the other night. After trounching Dave with Tyranids, I did ask whether he thought that the Deathwing list was, well, ‘all that’. It just didn’t seem to perform that well against my little bugs. Dave was confident that it dead well with other lists.
I should’ve listened more carefully.
I decided that, rather than play against with the Nids, I should trial my Grey Knights. I hadn’t built my Chimera, so made some last minute adjustments to the list (including, foolishly, giving my Inquisitor a conversion beamer, even though he was meant to get up close and personal with his combi-melta and psychotroke grenades.) As my Knights weren’t all painted, or even painted in the main, I decided not to do a full battle report, so I’ve just got these brief notes. We chucked down five objectives, and Dave set up his Deathwing on one side and I set up on the other, literally facing him.
I wasn’t very cognisant of the fact that I had little to get me into Land Raiders. I had the Librarian’s warp rift, the Demon Hammer, a lascannon on one Razorback, the Conversion Beamer, the two Psydreadrifles and the assassin. It seemed like a lot. The assassin was melta’d into a blob pretty quickly; the lascannon on the razorback was blown to pieces; the dreadnoughts were cycloned to shreds fairly quickly; the conversion beamer missed and the Inquisitor then ran on in to use his melta, and got frazed; the Librarian bought it as he had no cover; the Demon hammer was one of the casualties of Storm Bolter fire. Everything else just had death rained down upon them. I did nothing. Absolutely nothing. And then I fled. I failed those morale rolls, and Belial just chased me on in, consolidating to within 6” every time to race me off of the table.
Tabled.
So, there we go, it seems that Dave’s Deathwing really do do the business, being perfectly primed to screw over exactly the kind of marine-style army I was fielding. Live and learn.
Armies reliant on power weapons in melee have it rough versus death wing and necrons. Armies with 20+ models with Inv saves will rock since those weapons often fail. Its why my lychguard rock people. 10 guys at t5 4+ inv saves and 4+ reanimation protical are nasty. I would hate to see 25 thunder hammer storm shield guys and the punishment they can take.
